We’ll plan to paddle from Mukilteo out to Hat Island and see if we can find some whales. Itinerary may flex a little based on whale activity in the days prior. This will be a sea kayak trip, and there might be some wind and waves. If the weather doesn’t look great a few days out, I may reschedule.
We may have a few boats to lend out to keen paddlers who don’t have sea kayaks; check asap if that’s you.

Come paddle and join a weekend celebration of all the Cispus River has to offer! After years of hard work by the Washington Kayak Club, American Whitewater, Washington Recreational River Runners, Paddle Trails Canoe Club and many individuals in whitewater community collaborating with Lewis County Public Utility District, the District has reopened the Copper Canyon Take-out with a spacious new picnic shelter, boat ramp, and gravel trail to the river and creek.
The WKC trip is meeting at 10:30 at the Copper Canyon take-out (take-out site) on the LCPUD map https://www.lcpud.org/recreation/take-out-sites/. Use a map as gps driving directions frequently lead paddlers astray. We will be using the Twin Cedars put-in,
There will be a BBQ on Saturday afternoon in the new picnic shelter at the Copper Canyon Take-out. Please register so we can get a count. Hamburgers and hotdogs are on the menu along with vegan options.
Camping:
It is important to note there is no camping along the access road owned by Port Blakely. Camping is available at Taidnapum Park downstream. Informal camping on Forest Service land upstream of the Iron Creek bridge is available. There are also private campgrounds in the area.
Options for Sunday include paddling the Lower Cispus again. For those looking for harder adventures, the Upper Cispus, Superslide. McCoy Creek, and Yellowjacket Creek are all nearby.
It’s always sunny on the Cispus.

We‘ll focus on increasing the efficiency and speed of our
flatwater strokes, whether for a citizen-class canoe race or a
camping trip in the BWCA. Or just to stop exhausting ourselves
weaving across Green Lake.
The emphasis will be on practicing stroke styles from marathon
canoeing: short, vertical, with a crisp entry and minimal stern
correction, swapping sides fluidly and in sync with a partner.
Depending on interest we can spend time on issues like
trimming the boat, paddling in wind, differences between
paddling with bent and straight shafts,
dealing with mismatched partners, and efficient turns.
We‘ll keep it fun with some informal contests.
This day is targeted at tandem canoes, and solo canoes that can be paddled
sitting in center and swapping stroke side easily - not high-rocker solo whitewater
canoes or wide solo canoes meant to be paddled kneeling on one side.
If you can find a bent-shaft paddle and Wenonah-style canoe, great!,
but not necessary.

In November, the river will likely have lower flows than in spring, but you can still expect a moderate current and cold water temperatures. The air will be crisp, and rain is possible, so come prepared with a dry suit or wetsuit to stay warm and dry. This trip offers beautiful fall scenery, including views of the surrounding mountains, forests, and migrating birds. Since daylight hours are shorter, be sure to bring a headlamp and plan accordingly. This trip is suitable for those who are comfortable in cold conditions and on Class 1+ rivers.

Make sure to bring a headlamp for visibility.
