Early morning quiet water paddle. We‘ll take our time, enjoying the (hopefully) calm of the morning on the water. Bring your camera or your binoculars. We‘ll put in at the Fritz Hedges Waterway Park on the north shore of Portage Bay (Lake Union). From there, we can explore wherever we feel drawn to.

Not flatwater, but not whitewater. A happy medium is what I‘m looking for. Some wind and waves are welcome for the fun and challenge they present. I‘ll vary up the locations (I‘m also open to suggestions!), but it‘ll likely be a variety of trips around Lake Union and the Montlake Cut, some coastal paddling along Alki or between Discovery and Carkeek parks, or some class I/I+ rivers. Canoes or sea kayaks welcome. Flotation is required, and knowledge of/experience with self-rescue techniques is preferred.

Langus Riverfront Park on Smith Island east of Everett (access from Hwy 599)
Sun, Oct 20, 2024 at 9:30 AM
The highway 599 bridge restoration will hopefully be finished in September and we can paddle again from Langus Park. We‘ll do a quick car shuttle then paddle upstream a mile and turn left into Steamboat Slough. We‘ll glide past South Spencer, North Spencer and Smith Islands on our left, and Ebey, Otter and North Ebey Islands to our right. We‘ll pass several marine habitat restoration sites as this area gets more and more back to nature. A fairly high low tide will allow us to paddle over the tideflats below Smith Island to Jetty Island and our landing point of 10th St. Boat Launch. Trip distance 10.5 mi, about half with a gentle tidal assist, half minimal current. Lunch will be in our canoes in this undeveloped tidal area with no good landing sites.

Come and get together with all of your paddling friends and share food and stories of paddling adventures from this past year and plan for fall paddling! It‘s a great way to meet new and old club members. As always, we’ll have a great potluck dinner (please bring a dish to share) with beverages supplied by the club. There will be a gear swap, cookie awards and elections for next year‘s board.

Southern Hood Canal: Annas Bay
Take the ferry to Bremerton and drive to Union, about a 90 minute trip from Seattle. Hopefully we‘ll get some fall colors as we explore the Skokomish River Estuary. This should be a fairly protected paddle, unless there are strong winds. High tide is at 3:13pm and we‘ll try to get on the water by 11.

Nisqually Boat Launch, a/k/a Luhr Landing, at the east end of Miluhr Rd
Sat, Nov 9, 2024 at 9:20 AM
The tide schedule makes this the best weekend day of 2024 to run this interesting tidal stream in the Nisqually Delta region. Come join us for a trip through tide flats at the edge of Puget Sound, then meandering river, then inland tidal grasslands.
We will launch from the Nisqually Reach Boat Ramp and follow the west shore south. About 3 miles from the launch the creek will finally reveal itself and provide us with a tide-assisted journey inland. If no newly-downed trees block the way, we will paddle to the head of navigation, about 5 1/2 miles from the launch point.
Lunch will be in our boats as there are no landing spots on this tidal creek. By the time we finish lunch the tide should now be flowing back toward Puget Sound and give us a gentle push northward for the first 2 1/2 miles. We will have a gentle current in this portion of the creek with no rapids. Total trip distance about 11 miles. Bring lunch and a Discover Pass for the WDFW boat launch parking. Please be on time, we need to launch by 9:40 for best tidal assistance.
In the event of bad weather, we will run the trip the following day, Sunday Nov. 10, but meeting 1/2 hour later.
